Dialogue with Todd Hewitt
About Todd Herwitt
[INSERT INTRO OF TODD]
How has the wellness industry evolved over the past decade?
It is still evolving. I don’t think that anyone quite understands what wellness is or what they want to do with it. Both consumers and promoters are not sure so they try all different approaches. But I think the constant reference to wellness is making people more aware of their mental and physical needs. COVID has certainly pushed this further in the past three years. Work From Home has probably allowed people to experience a better work life balance for the first time in many generations, which is why a lot don’t want to return to the office setting.
In your opinion, what does it take to run a successful spa business?
It starts at the top. One needs to hire people who understand people, especially therapists. They are a different breed of people. And I say that with love. Imagine touching people all day long trying to solve all their issues within 30 or 60 minutes. Believe me. The guests are not models with perfect bodies. They have injuries, may not have good personal hygiene and have their distinct likes and dislikes. And if they don’t feel a connection within the first two minutes, you cannot please them no matter what. So the top people need to coach, guide and constantly support the team of staff who provide pampering for others. When this happens you can feel the magic and love in the spa.
Why did you go into the CBD business and what do you think the future holds?
I went into the CBD business because I saw the benefits of this natural plant. It is not a narcotic or addictive drug or one that should make governments afraid. Hemp has been grown for centuries in China. They are actually the largest producer of hemp in the world, they export CBD to other countries even though they ban its use domestically. I have seen how it helps people naturally - reducing severe inflammation, helping people get much needed sleep, providing clearer skin. The list goes on. Unfortunately in Hong Kong I see it eventually being turned over to big pharma companies who will benefit the most, as usual, and the consumer will pay far more than they should for something that is natural.
What advice would you give to the new players in the wellness industry?
New player advice. Find a component of wellness that you are passionate about. Start small. Don’t try to be everything to everyone. Provide truth.
What’s the secret to having perfect skin like yours? (Note, Todd is over 60 and he has the firmest and glowing skin!)
I never thought of myself having perfect skin. Hmmmmm. Drink lots of water. Exercise regularly to get a good sweat which is good for the skin to rid itself of impurities. Use moisturiser after every shower. If you can, add a few drops of a good quality face oil with your skin cream when you apply it. Get lots of sleep. NEVER use soap on the face. Don’t carry excess weight on your body as it ages you. Eat as little processed foods as possible. Enjoy ice cream when you get a chance!
